Wood Care Guide

Proper care ensures your handcrafted wooden pieces will last for generations

Oiling Your Wood

Regular oiling is the most important step in maintaining your wooden pieces. It nourishes the wood, prevents cracking, and maintains the beautiful finish.

Oiling Schedule

  • First month: Oil weekly to establish a protective barrier
  • Months 2-6: Oil every 2-3 weeks as the wood absorbs less
  • After 6 months: Oil monthly or when the wood looks dry
  • Heavy use items: Oil more frequently for cutting boards and utensils

How to Oil

  1. Clean and completely dry the wood surface
  2. Apply food-safe mineral oil or our recommended wood conditioner liberally
  3. Let the oil soak in for 10-15 minutes
  4. Wipe away excess oil with a clean, soft cloth
  5. Let it dry for 4-6 hours before use
  6. For extra protection, apply a beeswax finish after the oil has absorbed

Recommended Products

Use food-safe mineral oil, walnut oil, or specialized cutting board oil. Never use vegetable or olive oil as they can become rancid.

Daily Cleaning

Proper cleaning maintains hygiene without damaging the wood's natural beauty.

Do This

  • Wash with warm water and mild dish soap
  • Dry immediately with a clean towel
  • Stand cutting boards upright to air dry
  • Use a paste of baking soda and water for stains
  • Sanitize with white vinegar or lemon juice

Avoid This

  • Never use the dishwasher
  • Don't soak in water for extended periods
  • Avoid harsh chemical cleaners
  • Don't use abrasive scrubbers
  • Never leave standing in water

Storage & Environmental Care

Wood is a natural material that responds to its environment. Proper storage prevents warping and cracking.

Best Practices

Keep Away from Heat Sources

Avoid placing near stoves, ovens, or in direct sunlight for extended periods

Maintain Stable Humidity

Ideal humidity is 40-60%. Use a humidifier in dry climates or winter

Store Flat or Upright

Cutting boards should be stored vertically to allow air circulation

Room Temperature Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from extreme temperature changes

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Wood Feels Dry or Rough

Solution: Increase oiling frequency. Apply multiple coats of mineral oil, allowing each to soak in fully before wiping excess.

Minor Warping

Solution: Lightly dampen the concave side and place a weight on the board overnight. Oil both sides equally to prevent future warping.

Surface Scratches or Knife Marks

Solution: Light scratches add character. For deeper marks, lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper, following the grain. Re-oil thoroughly after sanding.

Stains or Discoloration

Solution: Make a paste with baking soda and water. Apply to stain, let sit for 5 minutes, then scrub gently with a soft cloth. Rinse and dry completely, then re-oil.

Small Cracks

Solution: Small cracks are natural. Keep the wood well-oiled to prevent expansion. If cracks grow larger, contact us for repair options.

Product-Specific Care

Cutting Boards

Oil weekly during first month, then monthly. Rotate sides regularly. Use separate boards for raw meats. Sand and re-oil annually for best performance.

Bowls & Servers

Hand wash immediately after use. Oil every 2-3 months or when wood appears dull. Store in dry area with good air circulation.

Utensils

Wash and dry after each use. Oil monthly. Replace if utensils show signs of splintering. Perfect for non-stick cookware as they won't scratch.
